Bel Marra Health, who offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, reports a new study that demonstrates that men in kilts may have better sperm quality than men who wear boxers or briefs.

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article, (http://www.belmarrahealth.com/anti-aging/infertility/research-shows-that-men-should-be-the-ones-in-skirts/) kilt wearing men may be more fertile and better able to procreate, according to the Scottish Medical Journal.

Infertility, defined as an inability to conceive a child, is often associated as a female problem; however, infertility actually affects men and women in equal numbers. In fact, approximately 7.5 to 12 percent of adult males are infertile, and infertility rates are on the rise.

Male infertility is caused by a variety of factors, and some of the top causes include problems with semen, sperm with an abnormal shape and/or size, slow sperm mobility and perhaps most commonly, a low overall sperm count. Lifestyle factors such as excessive alcohol intake, obesity, smoking and a poor diet can all reduce sperm health and increase a male?s risk for infertility.

On the other hand, making healthy lifestyle choices can increase fertility, and according to Erwin JO Kompanje, (Senior Researcher at the Intensive Care department of Erasmus MC University Medical Centre, Netherlands), throwing away those jeans for a kilt might enhance sperm health and fertility.

The research analyzed literature pertaining to scrotal temperature, sperm health and fertility. According to Kompanje, wearing a skirt or a kilt without anything underneath it, results in an ideal scrotal environment because it allows the testicles to hang low and ?breathe? and keeps them at a slightly lower temperature than the rest of the body. This is beneficial because temperature plays a direct role in sperm health, and sperm thrive when kept at a temperature that is one or two degrees lower than the rest of the body. Unfortunately, when men wear briefs and pants, it pushes the testicles towards the body and exposes the testicles to higher temperatures?temperatures which may compromise sperm health.

The researcher concluded that ??men who regularly wear a kilt (without underpants) during the years in which they wish to procreate will, as a group, have significantly better rates of sperm quality and higher fertility.? Although this conclusion makes sense, it should be noted that there have been no large-scale scientific studies to directly prove this assumption. However, there has been a study on the effects of wearing tight underpants, and the study confirmed that it does in fact increase the temperature deep inside the scrotum.

According to Kompanje, the benefits of wearing a kilt are not purely due to the decrease in scrotum temperature. "Wearing a kilt has strong psychological bene?ts. A kilt will get you noticed no matter where you are. Research indicates that men wearing a kilt experience a strong sense of freedom and masculinity and that many women are attracted to men in kilts."

He concluded that, "because the kilt is a purely masculine garment, men need not be ashamed of or reticent about the therapeutic wearing of a kilt for a certain period of time to possibly improve sperm quantity and quality."

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 11, 2013

Bel Marra Health, who offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, reports a new study that found an inverse relationship between the consumption of walnuts and the risk for diabetes.

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article (http://www.belmarrahealth.com/diabetes-2/this-one-food-could-greatly-reduce-your-risk-for-diabetes/) that diabetes is often mistaken for an incurable and unmanageable disease. However, the majority of type-2 (adult onset) diabetes cases are both preventable and reversible. Following a diet which includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, lean protein, beans, legumes and whole grains, while restricting processed, sugary and trans fat-containing foods vastly reduces risk for type-2 diabetes. In fact, making small changes to a diabetic diet ? such as adding in a couple servings of walnuts per week ? could reduce risk for diabetes by over 20 percent.

In the United States, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death, while about 12 percent of women are currently affected by diabetes. Gestational diabetes develops in 18 percent of all pregnancies, and diabetes increases the risk for miscarriages and birth defects. In general, all fats have long been demonized as contributors to diabetes, but recent research suggests that total fat intake isn?t the problem; instead, it is the type of fat that is consumed. More specifically, trans fats and saturated fats are related to a higher risk for diabetes while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with a lower risk.

Walnuts are particularly high in polyunsaturated fatty acids; they are also low in sugar and carbohydrates and high in fiber, protein, omega-3s and antioxidants. The nutritional profile of walnuts prompted researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health to study the effects of consuming walnuts on the risk for developing type-2 diabetes. For the investigation, researchers followed 79,893 women aged 35-52 and 58,063 women aged 52-77 for ten years. It is important to note that none of these women had diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer at the start of the study.

The researchers found an inverse relationship between the consumption of walnuts and the risk for diabetes. What this means is that a higher consumption of walnuts is associated with a lower risk for developing type-2 diabetes. More specifically, the women who consumed two or more servings of walnuts per week as part of a healthy diabetic diet experienced a 15 to 21 percent lower risk for type-2 diabetes. Although the study was conducted on women, the high polyunsaturated fat content and overall nutrient profile of walnuts should make them equally beneficial for the prevention of diabetes in men.

Walnuts should be consumed in moderation -- walnuts are high in healthy fats, but even healthy fats can contribute to weight gain when consumed in excess. One serving of walnuts (about seven walnuts) can equal to about 28 grams. In general, including walnuts in a diabetic diet should be limited to one serving per day.

Bel Marra doctors advise that a daily serving of any type of nut (including almonds, pistachios, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts, cashews and macadamias) can help to reduce the risk for type-2 diabetes. For optimal results, consume only unsalted nuts as part of a diabetic diet plan, since sodium increases blood pressure which, in turn, increases the risk for diabetes. Also, nuts should be consumed raw, because heat exposure degrades the nutrients in nuts and ruins the beneficial effects of the healthy fats.

Long Beach, CA;Chicago, IL;Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 28, 2012 -- A health publishing division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, Doctors Health Press, which publishes various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a recent study performed at the Mayo Clinic that is shedding light on the effects of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) on a patient?s diet and overall health.

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/food-and-nutrition-articles/if-you-have-ibs-you-must-avoid-these-foods), IBS is probably the most common digestive disorder seen by doctors. Basically, this condition results when the normal contractions of your digestive tract become irregular and uncoordinated. Material starts to accumulate in the digestive tract, and causes stomach problems, bloating, pain, and constipation. Not surprisingly, many people learn to fear eating, which seems to trigger all the painful digestive symptoms that go along with IBS. Malnutrition can then become a real problem.

As noted in the article ?If You Have IBS, You MUST Avoid These Foods,? researchers recently conducted a study that surveyed IBS patients over a six-month period by having them complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions about dietary beliefs and habits. In all, 244 patients were surveyed.

The research team found that nearly half reported that the disease had changed the pleasure of eating, while 67% reported purposely avoiding certain foods that they usually liked in order to prevent relapse.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article reports that researchers concluded that severe restrictions in diet are common among IBS sufferers looking to manage their condition. To prevent malnutrition, the article suggests that IBS patients switch to a high-fiber diet, and take psyllium powder to regulate bowel movements. As well, patients should consider trying charcoal tablets to treat attacks (though not on a daily basis), rather than restricting their diet.

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study, published in Molecular and Cellular Biology, finding that hydrogen sulfide can offer a wide scope of anti-aging benefits.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-2/new-compound-found-for-anti-aging) notes, scientists may have uncovered one compound that could play a huge role in preserving a body?s youthfulness. While hydrogen sulfide has been getting attention for its effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, evidence is mounting that hydrogen sulfide slows aging by inhibiting free-radical reactions (just as an antioxidant does), activating a key enzyme that may regulate the human lifespan, and interacting with a gene that has great influence in anti-aging matters.

As the article ?New Compound Found for Anti-Aging? reports, the body produces hydrogen sulfide, which has many important effects. For example, it acts in certain ways to relax arteries and keep them clear of possible blockages (which lead to atherosclerosis). It is also a powerful antioxidant. It also helps fight inflammation, the cause of a vast array of diseases.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article explains that levels of hydrogen sulfide in the body decline with age. In rats, lower levels of hydrogen sulfide were linked with high blood pressure. In general, a lack of this compound is implicated in heart disease.

The article adds that declining levels of hydrogen sulfide are thought to undermine neurological health, as well. In animal models of Parkinson?s disease, levels have been very low. The same can be said of people who suffer from Alzheimer?s disease. There are even suggestions that hydrogen sulfide may protect against cancer.

Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin concludes by noting that the researchers believe evidence now strongly suggests that hydrogen sulfide could become the next major agent in preventing aging and the diseases that come with it.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 29, 2013

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study finding nanomedicine to be three times more effective than conventional medications in the treatment of eye infections.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-2/health-news/this-could-be-the-new-frontier-in-eye-health) notes, many people don?t have perfect eyesight due to injury, age-related wear and tear, and disease. For those who don?t have good eyesight, they might find it difficult to read from afar, or may feel like everything is constantly blurry. For some people, this may be a temporary state, but for many unfortunate others, poor eyesight is a permanent fact of life.

As the article ?This Could Be the New Frontier in Eye Health? reports, one of the main triggers for poor eyesight is the presence of a corneal infection. Many times, people find that, somehow, bacteria are able to invade the cornea after surgery?and that?s when an infection can set in.

These infections can be serious, causing irritation, ruptures, and inflammation. If left untreated, blurry vision, and even blindness, can result. In addition, this type of infection is much more widespread these days, due to the increase in corneal surgeries for cataracts, glaucoma, and other conditions.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article states that researchers have discovered that they can use nanomedicine to improve the delivery and quantity of medicine that an infected eye receives.

Normally, conventional drops are put into the eye; with this type of drug delivery, scientists estimate a mere five percent of the medicine actually reaches the site of infection. Since the patient?s natural tendency is to blink and tear up whenever something touches their eyeball, an even greater amount of the medicine is washed away, making these conventional drugs very ineffective.

But according to the article, that?s where nanomedicine comes in. Scientists have come up with a way to get drugs directly where they are needed in the right quantities. Soft contacts can be filled with nanoparticle drugs and delivered to a precise spot on the eye. Not only that, but the medicine can be released over a sustained period of time.

Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin reports that a research team recently tested the effects of nanomedicine on dogs with glaucoma. They delivered a drug called ?timolol? through contact lenses. Because the nanomedicine was concentrated and potent, only one-third of a dose was needed to reduce ocular pressure when compared to conventional eye drops. The researchers also experimented by adding vitamin E to the nanomedicine, which had the effect of prolonging the release of the timolol.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin concludes, this research has the potential to change the lives of people with vision problems.

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study by University of Cincinnati researchers finding that lightning may trigger a migraine, or even a regular headache.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-2/the-intriguing-link-between-lightning-and-headaches) notes, weather has long been a suspected culprit for the onset of migraines, and this new study adds to that notion. As the first study to tie lightning to headaches, this finding might help chronic sufferers anticipate headache and migraine arrival more efficiently, allowing them to take their method of prevention more quickly in anticipation.

As the article ?The Intriguing Link Between Lightning and Headaches? reports, researchers found that there is a 31% higher risk of headache and a 28% higher risk of migraine in people who are chronic sufferers when lightning strikes within 25 miles of home. For those who do not tend to get headaches, researchers noted that lightning increased the risk of new-onset headache and migraine by 24% and 23%, respectively.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article adds that in the study, researchers used special mathematical models to determine if the lightning was the cause of the increased frequency of headaches or whether it could be attributed to other weather factors encountered with thunderstorms. The results showed a 19% increased risk for headaches on lightning days, even after accounting for these weather factors. This means that those tremendous electric currents from the sky bear unique effects on headaches.

Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin suggests that this might happen due to the electromagnetic waves that are emitted from lightning, or perhaps due to a rise in air pollutants caused by lightning strikes that can release fungal spores into the atmosphere tied to migraines.

As the article concludes, it is guesswork right now as to how environmental factors like humidity and barometric pressure influence severe headaches. Most believe they do, but it?s unknown exactly how or why. This study helps to clearly show a link between lightning and headaches.

According to a recently published article in the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, smaller plates, like beBetter Health?s Portion Plate, can be used to combat the childhood obesity epidemic.

?This study provides some great insights on the decision-making process of kids when they serve themselves,? says beBetter Health?s Portion Plate? product manager, Ryan Cameron. ?The Kids Portion Plate was developed to not just show kids proper portions, but to also help them recognize which food groups (fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains) to focus on.?

The study, ?Plate Size and Children?s Appetite: Effects of Larger Dishware on Self-Served Portions and Intake,? evaluated the effect of larger dishware on children?s self-served portion sizes and intake during meals. The 42 elementary school children studied served themselves an entr?e and side dish using either child- or adult-size dishware, which represented a 100 percent increase in the surface area of plates and volumes of bowls across conditions. The children who used the larger dishware self-served, on average, 90 calories more than those children using the smaller dishware. The study also showed that, when using larger dishware, children did not serve themselves more vegetables, although they did serve themselves more fruits.

?One simple solution to this study?s findings is to provide children with proper portion-sized plates. A smaller plate can help guide children toward correct portion sizes,? says Amanda Piccolo, MS, RD for the Association for Child Development. ?Additionally, it is important to teach children to fill their portion appropriate plate half full of fruits and vegetables. Helping children visualize what their plate should look like will help them get important nutrients needed to grow and remain healthy.?

beBetter Health's Kids Portion Plate? was developed with the input of registered dietitians and abides by the USDA MyPlate guidelines in regards to portion size and nutrition guidance. By the use of fun pictures, the Kids Portion Plate? gives children a friendly reminder of proper portions and healthy food groups.

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study finding that combining vitamin D and corticosteroids may be the most effective treatment for psoriasis.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/women?s-health/skin-care/vitamin-d-vs-corticosteroids-for-this-skin-problem) notes, psoriasis is one of those tricky conditions to treat. Often, the cause of psoriasis isn?t clear, which can make finding an effective remedy more of a challenge. And while psoriasis does have some unpleasant symptoms, mainly in the form of skin irritations, most people treat the condition because they want to have smooth, healthy, glowing skin.

As the article ?Vitamin D vs. Corticosteroids for This Skin Problem? reports, topical creams that contain corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to treat psoriasis. Corticosteroids are synthetic steroids that mimic natural hormones and are supposed to reduce inflammation and help stop allergic reactions. However, corticosteroids, while effective, can cause a number of prescription drug side effects in certain people. The more potent they are, the more likely a person is to suffer from side effects.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article states that an alternative treatment for psoriasis involves using topical creams with added vitamin D, which is thought to lessen the severity and length of a psoriasis outbreak, as well as reduce scaling and inflammation. Vitamin D also helps to slow the growth of skin cells, which is a good thing when it comes to psoriasis; the fewer skin cells that grow and become inflamed?forming dry, scaly patches?the better.

According to the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, researchers recently reviewed the performance of these two psoriasis treatments. In all, 177 trials were included in the researchers? study. They found that vitamin D and corticosteroids worked better as a combined treatment than either treatment on its own. The researchers also noted that vitamin D was significantly less effective than potent corticosteroids when used to treat scalp psoriasis. However, they cautioned that most of the trials failed to report if long-term use of corticosteroids increases the risk for permanent skin dermal atrophy, a condition where the skin thins.
